Love and Logic

Updated October 2007

What is Love and Logic?

Love and Logic is a common sense approach to classroom management and schoolwide discipline planning that focuses on handing back to children the problems they cause and replacing the typical educator responses of anger, lectures, threats, or repeated warnings with empathy followed by logical consequences.  In short, Love and Logic is what every educator and parent wants, a DISCIPLINE APPROACH THAT BUILDS SELF DISCIPLINE.  The consistent application of the philosophy and approach produces the following results:
   - Students increase their sense of responsibility for their actions
   - Students own and solve their behavioral problems
   - Students learn how to handle peer pressure, bullying, and teasing
   - Educators recognize and address students’ four basic needs
   - Educators generate positive responses from negative students

The broader schoolwide aims of Love and Logic training include:
   - Establishing true consistency in discipline throughout the school
   - Replacing punishment with learning opportunities (natural consequences)
   - Helping to motivate students to learn and behave in the classroom
   - Helping create learning environment where students are self disciplining
   - Increasing student achievement
   - Bringing more JOY to classrooms and the school

Love and Logic aligns with the principles of human behavior and learning presented in LEAD's Instructional Leadership Academy, particularly Motivation, Reinforcement, and Attribution.

Who should participate in Love and Logic?
The class is designed for elementary, middle, and high school leadership teams.  The team might consist of the principal, counselor, and one or two teacher leaders.  Team members should be willing to help train other staff (teachers as well as support staff) in their own schools.  Superintendents and other school personnel may want to participate to expand their awareness in order better support the Love and Logic approach throughout the school district.
What is the training format?

To balance the need for in-depth learning and minimize time away from school, Love and Logic will be presented in two one-day modules with advance preparation and after-training follow-up required.

What is the learning sequence?

PHASE 1 - FOUNDATION BUILDING
Advance Preparation:
Participating school principals will receive a core values survey to administer to staff.  Principals will tabulate the surveys and bring the results to the first training module.
Training Module 1: This one-day training seminar will focus on the foundational principles of Love and Logic, simulations and practice to develop fluency with the language and processes, and guided planning time related to training the rest of the school staff and implementing the philosophy.

PHASE 2 - SCHOOL TRAINING & IMPLEMENTATION
Local Training & Implementation: School principals and/or leadership teams will begin training other staff in their schools and begin implementing according to plans developed during the Module 1 seminar.
Follow-Up Progress Check: Prior to Module 2, principals will be surveyed to identify what's working, what's not, additional training needed, or retraining needed.
Training Module 2:
This one-day seminar will reinforce the original learning, address the needs identified in the follow-up survey, and introduce strategies for working with parents.  There will be guided planning time for modifying and adjusting schools’ implementation plans.  In addition, a system for networking will be established for schools to connect with and support each other.
PHASE 3 - EXTENDED FOLLOW-UP
Follow-up contacts will be made several months after Module 2 to identify implementation problems and additional training needs and interests.  Additional training and/or support will be developed as appropriate.
